Frostburg, Md. — The Standard Charitable Foundation, with support from Standard Bank, has awarded a $2,500 grant to the Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation to help fund “Elementary Edibles,” an impactful health and science enrichment program for disadvantaged children. “Elementary Edibles” provides a school-year-long, hands-on edible gardening program designed to increase student willingness to try healthy foods by 20% or more and to increase student science literacy by 25% or more, as measured by pre/post-tests.
With its partners, the Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation leverages the historic 130-acre Evergreen Heritage Center (EHC) farm and estate in Frostburg, Maryland to provide high-quality education programs for thousands of youth and adults annually. With an emphasis on experiential (hands-on) outdoor education, the Foundation encourages exploration and investigation, providing the knowledge and skills for individuals to sustain both themselves and our planet. The EHC Foundation has consistently achieved a 25% to 50% increase in student science literacy per pre/post-tests. As a result, the Foundation received the Richard A. Johnson Award for excellence in education in 2015, was conferred with a Maryland Sustainable Growth Award in 2015 and received a commendation from the Maryland General Assembly in 2018.
Since it was founded in 2008, the Foundation has grown from one class of 28 students to over 8,000 students and families in academic year 2017-18, continuing its track record of increasing science literacy. These impactful programs, where hands-on lessons are conducted in small groups, include science field trips for elementary, middle, and high school students; discovery summer camps; and in-school programs (such as the Elementary Edibles gardening program supported by the Standard Charitable Foundation) that teach young children where their food comes from, how it grows, and how to eat healthy.
