$10,000 in Grants Awarded to Greensburg Salem

Standard Charitable Foundation Awarded $10,000 in Grants to the Greensburg Salem School District

Greensburg, Pa.  –  Standard Charitable Foundation has awarded $10,000 in grants to Greensburg Salem School District (GSSD) for a project designed to enhance the physical education program at the high school.  The grants were awarded in two installments in 2014 and 2015. The grants supported enhancements that will provide safe and functional strength and aerobic conditioning equipment for the Alumni Fitness Center. This new equipment will improve and expand exercise opportunities for the entire 900 person student body, while introducing them to lifelong fitness options.

The strategic initiative was developed by great community volunteer and leader, Jennings Womack, who recently passed away. The project was divided into three phases. First, new rubber flooring designed specifically for athletic facilities was installed by the district. Phase two, which was completed in September, focused on the purchase of strength equipment, including combination racks and free weights. The final phase, which was recently completed, purchased cardiorespiratory enhancement equipment.

“This has been a very comprehensive project! Many thanks to The Standard Charitable Foundation and the generosity of all the others that have enabled us to make this much progress in providing our students with the proper equipment,” commented GSSD Athletic Director Lynn Jobe. “Teaching students to value their health and engage in lifelong, positive lifestyles is certainly an objective of educating the whole child at Greensburg Salem.”

Anne-Marie Welty, office supervisor of Standard Bank’s Greensburg office, adds “As a community bank, Standard Bank values the importance of educating youth to make healthy lifestyle choices.  We are proud to support GSHS with this grant and their efforts to instill a wholesome, lifelong education in their students! This project also pays great tribute to our friend Jennings Womack, who is deeply missed.”

David Zilli, GSHS principal agrees with Welty, “Jennings’ work with Greensburg Salem will have a lasting impact on all of our students.  He not only supported us through fundraising, but he also supported our students and athletes as a mentor, a coach, and as a friend. Jennings’ legacy will always be visible in the Fitness Center and with the relationships he developed in the time he was a Golden Lion.”
